Borlase Equestrian
Borlase Equestrian can easily be classed a rather minority
sport at Borlase. However, our achievements in comparison
to our size are pretty impressive! We are currently in our
third year as a team, and this year we have allowed many
of the younger members take the reins thanks to myself
and Izzy Phillips having broken horses and Tsering Lock
unfortunately suffering from a broken leg. Those still
standing, however young they may be, have still pulled off
some great results.
Equestrian competitions are somewhat interesting. You
pull into venues alongside lorries that cost the same as a
small house. It is at these events that you are blinded by the
sheer amount of tweed and last season’s Barbour is most
definitely frowned upon! Amongst the likes of Wycombe
Abbey, Wellington College and Queen Anne’s with their
many grooms, dedicated trainers and never ending string
of ponies, we come trundling in, but we’re getting quite
good at beating them! Last year we competed at Royal
Windsor Horse Show in which our team was second,
beating the top equestrian schools in the UK. One of only
two state schools in the competition we certainly held our
own.
Many of our younger members have been gaining
experience this year such as Ed Manthorpe in Year 8,
and Minna Hughes and Ella Carter from Year 7 who have
all picked up some nice double clears throughout the
season. Ella Kennedy from Year 9 has also produced some
commendable dressage tests. Ed Manthorpe received the
coveted Equestrian of the year award normally reserved
for senior students.
Our senior squad of Emily Martin, Izzy Phillips, Zoe
Burroughs, Kate Wallace and Elsebine Bolier have picked
up some good team placings including a 7th at the
Jumping with Style qualifier amongst a huge field. Emily
and Ella also qualified for the National Championships last
December which is a huge feat in itself. However they just
missed out on placings.
Although this year may not have been as successful as
others, we have a lot of youngsters rapidly climbing the
ranks and still our comeback at Royal Windsor and the All
England Champs at
Hickstead to go! So
all I can say to our
fellow competitors
is watch out, we’ll
have you quaking
in your boots!
