Travelling away again for an early start at Gosling Tennis
Centre the four girls, Beth Marriott, Matilda Crowfoot,
Sophie Lane and Holly Russell, were really looking forward
to their matches against Ipswich School and some top
national players. Borlase went into the doubles looking
strong and confirmed their strength in depth with four
wins out of six played. Now Putney High were the only
barrier between Borlase and the national finals. The singles
were all close but only Holly Russell managed to secure
a win which meant Borlase needed to win both doubles
matches and unfortunately were unable to do so.
Well done to all and thank you Mr Robertson for entering
the team. We are all looking forward to making it all the
way next year.
AEGON National Championships 2013
AEGON TeamTennis Schools U18 Competition
Following last years very successful run in the Aegon team tennis Year 10 tournament, Mr Robertson decided to enter
the same girls into the u18 competition this year.
Their first match was away to Haberdashers Girls School and although returning very late in the evening they secured a
4 – 2 victory and safely through to the next round. Holly Russell played particularly well against one of the top players
in the country but the wins were recorded by Beth Marriott, Sophie Lane and Matilda Crowfoot in the singles and Beth
and Sophie in the doubles.
Borlase were drawn against St Paul’s for the next match and each one of the St Paul’s players were both rated and ranked
higher than their Borlase opponents. The match started soon after 3pm with 3 matches on the hard courts and one on
the astro. If St Paul’s thought they would be home in time for dinner they had to think again. All four singles were hard
fought and tense. Beth was first off winning 6 – 4 , 6 – 1. Unfortunately both Sophie and Holly lost their matches but
made their opponents fight hard for their wins. Then nearly an hour later Mattie came off court with an unbelievable
win in 3 sets. This meant the Borlase team had to win at least one of the doubles to stay in with a chance of drawing the
match and forcing a final deciding tie-break set. Both doubles stayed tight in scores and finished at exactly the same
time – just after 8pm and with one win gained by Beth and Sophie the scores were level at 3 – 3. Beth and Sophie then
stepped up for the deciding set and got off to a great start but St.Paul’s came back strongly, and worryingly, but the
Borlase pair held them off to finally win 10 –8. It was an incredible 6 hours of sport, with some fantastic tennis played by
all 8 girls. The Borlase team would like to thank Mr Robertson in particular for giving up so much of his time to support
them through to the next round which will be played against Queenswood – a specialist tennis school.
