The AGM voted Joshua Cooke (2000 –
2007) the next President-Elect.
Sadly, we have to announce the passing of two key
persons crucially involved in the history and development
of Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School in recent decades.
The more well-known of these two people was, of course
our former Headteacher, Roy Smith who died on 15
th
April
this year.
The other person was Dr. Peter Phillips, who, though
not an Old Borlasian, took it upon himself, as the public-
spirited figure he was, to nurture Borlase administratively
through turbulent years of change in the total picture of
educational structure in this area. It was Peter who fought
to keep Borlase safe from closure and then to establish the
School as a Trust. Peter died on 18
th
September 2012.
The death was also reported of Peter Penning, in October
2012.
OBITUARIES
Roy Smith 1928 – 2013.
It is with deep regret that we have
to announce the death of Roy
Smith, Headteacher at Sir William
Borlase’s from 1974 to 1988. Roy’s
health has long been a matter of
concern but in recent times its
deterioration became noticeably
marked. In early April it was clear
that Roy was fading and at 7.30am
on Monday 15
th
April Roy passed
away peacefully at his home in
Oxford Road, Marlow.
His funeral was held at The Chiltern
Woodland Burial Park, Jordans,
near Beaconsfield on Tuesday 23
rd
April and though, very
much a private family occasion, was attended by three O.B.
Club members.
A Memorial Service was later held at All Saints’ Parish
Church onMonday 3
rd
June andwas attended bymany Old
Borlasians, most of whom had been his pupils or members
of staff during his days at Borlase. We have to thank Roy’s
two nieces, Liz and Kate, and Andy Howland for keeping
us informed and enabling the news of the arrangements
to be sent to all the membership.
A man of wit, manners, consideration, fine judgment and
fairness
Roy as President of
the Old Borlasian
Club in the year 2000
