Old Borlasians
Two prominent Old Borlasians
are currently much in the public
eye in rowing circles.
Jono seeking Gold.
Duringmy time at Borlase I took up hockey under MrWedd
and within a short time I was representing the School,
then Marlow with some Buckinghamshire representation
following. In Year 9, I took up rowing and was one of the
first boys to gain experience under our first full time coach
(Ali Brown). Throughout my school years I was always top
of my game and just after my 18
th
birthday represented GB
Juniors at my first international event. I was also part of the
Borlase crew that forced a dead-heat in their Fawley Cup
race at Henley Royal Regatta (2008), so nearly winning the
event for Borlase.
Upon leaving school I continued my rowing with Leander
Club in Henley and I have 7 years of entry to Henley Royal
Regatta, winning three events on the run between 2009
and 2011. My trophy cabinet is quite large already. In 2010,
I was in the crew who became U23 World Champions in
the GB Lightweight 4, improving on the bronze medal I
had already won the previous year.
In September 2012 I joined the senior GB training
squad, following a silver medal at the 2012 European
Championships. During the winter I impressed the
selectors and was selected to make my senior debut at
the Sydney World Cup in the GB lightweight 4. Here we
won a silver medal. I have again been selected in the same
boat class for the next World Cup on the Olympic course
at Eton Dorney over the weekend 21 – 23 June and am
looking forward to competing on home water for the first
time. I hope to stay in the boat for the remainder of the
year racing in Switzerland and South Korea.
When not training I spend time back at Borlase as a
Performance Coach in the ever expanding Boat Club,
encouraging current school pupils in their rowing efforts,
hoping to inspire the next generation of Henley winners.
I also enjoy travelling (when I get released from training),
cooking (whilst maintaining my race weight of 70 – 72 kg)
and reading.
I’m working to establish myself as a key athlete in the
GB Lightweight Team on the long road to Rio, 2016. In
order to fulfil this ambition to become an Olympic GOLD
medallist, I am very interested in finding a sponsor to join
me in the quest. In return I offer full involvement with
the partnership and I am open to any suggestions of
sponsorship or product endorsement.
If any Borlasian considers that he or she may know
someone who can help me along my journey please do
contact me as below.
