Track and Field
As athletic standards for every event continue to improve at Borlase, school records for track and field are becoming
harder and harder to break. However, a handful of athletes managed the feat this year: Fraser Russell jumped 1m65 for
the inter boys high jump record whilst Oli Cooke cleared 1m45 for the junior boys record. Joe Wolfin, in discus, threw
25.02mwhilst Matt Rowley threw 30.86m to claim the inter boys record In the senior girls category Imogen Brown threw
the discus 21m43. In the javelin Ronan Halpin beat the junior boys record by throwing 27.18m whilst Imogen Brown
threw 27.30 to gain the senior girls record. Oli Cooke also threw the shot 11m30 to claim the junior boys record.
The year 9 and 10 athletics teams, boys and girls, both won their respective league titles with some impressive
performances along the way. The likes of Joe Thrush transferred his cross country prowess onto the track, whilst Lewis
Maguire has emerged as a formidable long jumper. Natasha Taylor has also proved her ability on the track so far this
year. Oli Cooke continues to demonstrate great athletics ability in running, jumping and throwing.
At the District Champs this year the school won 14 gold medals. In the Year 8 boys events the javelin was won by
Nick Winter. Oli Cooke won the 800m for year 9 boys whilst Matt Casale won the 1500m in the same age group. In
the Triple Jump Oli Lawrie also won gold. In the Year 9
girls Hurdles Ellie Bilsland won whilst in the 100m, 200m
and Long Jump Freya Bull was victorious. Freya also won
the Individual medal for best athlete in her age group.
The year 9 girls also won their relay with Ellie Bilsland,
Natasha Taylor, Connie Dean and Freya Bull. The Year
10/11 Boys had a gold in the Discus, Matt Rowley. Joe
Thrush won the 1500m and the Triple Jump was won by
Lewis McGuire. Finally in the Year 10/11 girls we had a
win in the Javelin from Ellie Wheeler and the relay with
Kara-Louise Gordon, Ellie Jackson, Ella Street and Frankie
Butler. Ellie Jackson also broke the school high jump
record with a height of 1m40.
There were some wonderful performances for Borlase
athletes in the County Championships at Milton Keynes
in June. In the Junior Girls section Ellie Bilsland won her
75mhurdles heat and then went on to win the final with a
time of 12.6secs. Ellie has qualified for the English Schools
Champs with this performance. Natasha Taylor has also
qualified for English Schools Champs in the 800m and
won her 800m heat and final at county with a time
of 2mins24.7secs. This is an impressive time and beats
Pippa Woolven’s school record of 2min26 from 2008.
In Junior Boys Nick Winter came second in the javelin
with a throw of 26.59m whilst in the Intermediate
Boys section Lewis McGuire placed fourth in the long
jump with a big distance of 5m57. This jump beats
Jamie Cartland’s 2006 school record of 5m49.
Lower down the school it was Nick Spicer who
demonstrated power with his throwing ability, whilst
Izzy Peplow, Jade Patel and Fin Duguid appear to be
the speed merchants of their year. Elliot Killington,
TomNorfolk, Eden Hudson andMary Anne-Grego had
impressive results over longer distances on the track
whilst Kate Cumming has demonstrated a very good
all round Jessica Ennis like standard.
