coming years. We are, of course, very sorry to say goodbye
to Mrs Moore, who was not only a great mathematics
teacher, but also a great form teacher. However, the Roman
army will carry on and continue moving from strength to
strength.

Normans
Having been made House prefects just over a year ago,
neither of us really knew what exactly being the Heads of
a House would involve. The answer is more than we could
have imagined – and it has been fantastic.
The year began with Normans House winning the overall
house cup for the year. This is the ultimate goal that every
house strives for, and for Normans to claim it was a dream
come true. Participation is our motto – if we work together
there is nothing we cannot do – as is proven by all our
achievements this year.
When we returned in September, it was a case of jumping
straight in and getting on with the many inter-house
competitions that go on during the year. This included the
House Mathematics Competition and the House Drama
Competition.
This year Normans House came within a finger’s breadth
of winning House Maths. It all came down to the last
question, which required the team to work together as a
group. Despite a stellar effort, Britons house just managed
to beat us to the answer. It was a promising result however,
our participation was excellent and we’re in a good
position to launch a successful attempt next year.
House Drama was an evening that clearly demonstrated
the outstanding amount of dramatic talent that not only
Normans, but so many students of Borlase have to offer.
On the evening of the final we were made to laugh by
comedy duologues, blown away by powerful monologues
and left astounded by the intensity of the Form Greek
tragedies. The House again stuck true to its motto and we
had the most entries in each category of any house! As
a result, we gained many points in the first round, to be
backed up excellently by our superb finalists. In the final
we had soloists, duets and groups. The technical theatre
students were also able to contribute to our total score.
Thanks to the combined effort of everyone, we won the
competition.
We understand that with the exception of a hard earned
second place in House Maths, we won every competition
that was run this year. We think this is an excellent record
and sets us in good stead to win the house cup again for
the second year in a row. With a good performance from
our athletes in the annual Sports Day, it could be ours
again. We have had a brilliant time leading our House –
however we must quickly extend thanks to our Heads of
House, Mr Adamson and Mrs Hopper for their support and
guidance.
Good luck for the year ahead, Normans! Keep up the great
work and effort!

Saxons
While the Saxon army has continued to march on from
success to success, the house has also experienced a
year of change within its ranks. Most notably, we saw Mrs
Birkett take over from Mrs Bungey as the leader of the
Saxon army, and we wished our outgoing Head of House
all the best as she stepped down from the role after many
years of loyal service. We’re sure that Mrs Birkett will do
an equally brilliant job in the years to come alongside Mr
McNally.
We started the year with the annual cross country and
the now nearly annual victory for James Veitch, winning
the senior boys event once again. Continuing with
this momentum we carried on into the House Drama
competition, being the only house to send two forms
through to the final and coming home with second and
third places. This was certainly made possible by having
moved into the Hall this year which was much more
practical than the Chapel for large-scale performances.
A very respectable fourth place in the inter-house maths
competition was a promising result for the House’s
mathletes with a lot of young potential in the team, and
we just missed out on the final as I may or may not have
got the final question wrong in our heat, costing us the
place…
Another fantastic year within the house was topped off by
a truly memorable assembly as we thwarted the Danish
invasion of our homeland. Saxons were victorious after a
series of challenges which pitted the champions of each
house against each other in gruelling battles of physical
strength and determination. We defeated the Danes with
our superior lung power by moving the most sweets out
of a bowl using only a straw, using our home advantage to
make sure they left knowing that they could not match the
greatest House of them all.
Finally, the house said goodbye to Greg and Tess, the
outgoing House Captains, as well as the rest of year 13
who have left their mark on the house, as I’m sure few
people will forget Ryan, Adam and Harry’s House Dance
antics from last year. The Saxon army now marches on to
Sports Day and the Tug-Of-War competition with an eye to
