Mrs Bateman
Mrs Bateman is leaving as Head of RS after seven years at
Borlase. She is takingupapositionatNewlandsGirls’School
in Maidenhead. She will take many happy memories of her
time at Borlase, but her favourite is the collaboration with
the Dance department to produce The story of Rama and
Sita from Hinduism. Particularly memorable was watching
some very interesting Bollywood dance moves from some
of the Year 7 boys. She also enjoyed taking pupils to the
Jewish Museum and Synagogue in London.
She has most enjoyed teaching Year 9 as she enjoys the
rigor of the GCSE syllabus and watching the students’skills
develop. Amongst all the happy memories, there are some
darker ones, most notably the morning when she arrived
at her classroom, H9, to find that there had been a break in
overnight and the projector had been stolen.
Although she is looking forward to her new job, she says
she will miss her friends on the staff here at Borlase and
also her tutor group, D3.
We asked her some questions about her life outside school
and her answers tell us much about her origins and her
beliefs. Her favourite music includes Irish country music,
and to a desert island she would take a fishing rod. As she
says:‘Give a person a fish, you feed them for one day; teach
them to fish and you feed them for life’.
Our best wishes go with Mrs Bateman.
Mr Sheen
Mr Sheen left Borlase in April for a new job at the University
of Northampton. He joined us seven years ago having
returned from nine years in America working in schools as a
mental health and substance abuse counsellor. Mr Sheen’s
role at Borlase was broad; he organised work experience for
years 10 and 11, advised students about A level choices, and
most significantly he worked with sixth formers, helping
themwith all aspects of their University applications.
Mr Sheen will be missed by parents, students and staff alike.
For parents and students, he was a source of information,
encouragement and solace. All thosewhoworkedwith him,
and particularly Mrs Bownass and Mrs Bungey, appreciated
hismeticulous attention to detail, his unfailing commitment
to meet deadlines – and, perhaps more importantly, his
great sense of fun.
Mr Arriandiaga
Mr Arriandiaga is leaving is leaving Borlase after four years.
We posed our special leaver’s questions to him.
Where are you going once you’ve left Borlase?
I’m going to a school in Middlesex. it’s an independent
boys’ school – very small compared to us.
What will be your post there?
I’ll just be a teacher of languages, which is what I’ve always
been.
What’s been your favourite moment here at Borlase?
Oh I think Miss Innes knows…it all happened a long time
ago in Monzon
So that’s your favourite part of Borlase. The Monzon
experience?
Well, to be serious, it’s probably the Madrid Spanish
exchange; that was definitely a highlight.
What’s been your worst moment at Borlase?
One word. Monzon.
What’s your favourite Spanish word?
Escarabajo. Which means cockroach!
What are your five favourite musical artists?
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, New Order and
Belle and Sebastian, to name just a few.
What would you take to a desert island, and don’t say a
boat, or a sat-nav, or a plane.
Suncream, and depending on how big it is, my bike!
Mr Eastwood
Mr Eastwood is leaving Borlase after one year working in
the Science Department. He is heading to Milton Keynes
where he will investigate making a career in triathlon
coaching.
He has enjoyed his short time at Borlase, and has been
heavily involved in coaching rowing. He says he will miss
the students, their conversation and sense of fun. However,
he won’t miss his Physics lab below the dance studio! He
can’t decide which is his favourite age group; year seven
are lively and enthusiastic. He says, ‘How anyone that small
can make so much noise is beyond me.’ He also enjoys the
intellectual challenge of teaching the sixth form.
We wish him well in his new life and career.
