Staff Leavers
This year, the Maths Department is losing both its Head and Second in Department. We couldn’t let them go
without finding out a few facts and secrets.
Mrs Moore
How long have you been at the school?
By the time I leave I’ll be one term short of six years.
And what are your plans for the future?
I’m going on to be an assistant head at a small girls’ school.
Any plans beyond that?
Well, who knows? The sky’s the limit, I might make head
someday.
What will you miss most about Borlase?
The pupils definitely – I’ll really miss teaching some of my
classes. But alsomy colleagues have been lovely; very, very
supportive. It’s a lovely working environment.
What would you say have been your best moments or
your favourite moments here at Borlase?
I can recall a really funny moment. It was in my first few
weeks of teaching at Borlase, and it was top set year 11
and they were a really really noisy class. I can remember
saying to the class,‘Why can I still hear noise?’and a cheeky
chappy (who will remain nameless – he’s now left the
school and gone off to university) said, ‘It’s because you’ve
got ears miss’ [laughs]. I’ve always remembered that; it’s
always made me laugh.
What would you say your favourite part about being
Head of Maths was?
I’ve really enjoyed reshaping the department – that’s
given me a lot of job satisfaction. But I’ve also really
enjoyed pupils getting the benefit of it; their grades being
extremely high. We’re now as a grammar school 14
th
in the
country, which creates great satisfaction for me.
So what is the best tip you could give a new student or
teacher or other type of human who’s new to Borlase?
For pupils: to make the most of their lives at Borlase
because it goes by incredibly quickly.
For staff: to enjoy the pupils.
Would you be able to construct a Haiku?
[laughs] No. Definitely not.
How about summing up your time here at Borlase in
five words?
Enjoyable...this is so hard...hang on hang on...challenging..
um...a great experience. That’s five, right?
Can you sum up your time here in three integers, one
irrational number and a mathematical constant?
I can’t actually... hang on...I give up. Does that make me a
bad maths teacher?
What’s your favourite song?
I did play one for a year 11 group, a song called
‘Mathmaticious’ by this nerdy boy in America, it’s on
YouTube and all about pi. But I wouldn’t say it’s my
favourite song. I just remember their faces dropping when
I told them I was going to play themmy favourite rap song.
[laughs]
What’s your favourite movie?
Gone with the Wind.
Favourite Book?
Probably also Gone with the Wind actually which is a bit
sad. It’s not a maths book.
How about if you had to listen to five bands/artists for
the rest of your life?
Oh I’m not into music – I’m too old. [laughs]
Why are you leaving Borlase?
Well I couldn’t let Mr Tidbury have the same job title as me.
[laughs]
