The Borlasian (2012) - page 66

You know you’re in Greenland when:
You encounter sausage stealing sea-gulls
You’re eaten alive by mozzies whilst wearing 10 layers of clothes
You get condensed milk confiscated at the airport
You scare away a polar bear with just your face
Every cairn shows either a route or a warning that a number two lies beneath
You make your friends get pretty much naked for your experiment
The Polar Bear Watch turns out to be Arctic Fox Watch
“the only way to outrun a Polar Bear is to run faster than someone else”
You bum slide/penguin down a mountain instead of walking
The red tent is your landmark for everything
Your trip gets made into an authentic monopoly game
You are surrounded by outstanding natural beauty in every single direction

Y9 Visit Villiers Park
On June 6th myself and three other Year 9 students, Becky Kershaw, Jed Thorpe and Loïc Derad, went on Borlase’s first
ever KS4 trip to Villiers Park in Cambridge. Villiers usually run subject specific courses for sixth formers and this was our
first venture into their junior courses.
Accompanied by Miss Mountfield, we arrived at the site in Foxton early on the morning of the 6th. There were five other
schools from all over the country there, each school with teams of four. After “getting to know each other” activities we
were presented with our task. We had to imagine Brazil had pulled out of hosting the 2016 Olympics and another South
American country must take over. Our task was to make a presentation outlining why the country we were given would
be the best replacement. Each team had to appoint specific roles to their teammembers relating to Geography, History,
Sports and Economics. We were also tasked not only with finding venues and budget but to think about the Paralympics
and what sport may be introduced. Our teamwas given the country Colombia. Knowing very little about the country, it
was a big task to research and find our information but in under six hours we managed to pull together an “extensive”
presentation the next day.
Before the presentations were made we went on a trip to visit the University. Although our tours had been cancelled
due to exams Miss Mountfield managed to get us into a few of the colleges. We then returned (after ice cream) to make
our presentations.
Following the presentations we were subjected to a five minute question time and then results were announced; we
won! With our prize of a mug each we returned to school on the Friday having thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
