We didn’t have long until the next competition so it was
imperative that we prioritized. One area that was exciting
tobranch intowas advertising.We consequently contacted
various newspapers. The Maidenhead Advertiser got
back to us. Most of the ads on offer were ludicrously out
of our budget, although one seemed achievable. Three
weeks later we had an official advert on the Maidenhead
Advertiser website.
The day after our advert went live we had the Bucks area
finals. We travelled to Milton Keynes and once more set up
our trade stand and presented our company. Again, we sat
through an awards ceremony without a mention although
this time the trend continued to the end. Did we agree
with the judge’s decision? Probably not, we believed in our
company and our product. But were we disappointed with
the result? Not in the slightest, it was fun whilst it lasted
but it had reached its end.

STEM Fayre
With the introduction of a new STEM co-ordinator and
the enthusiastic STEM prefects Maz O’Connor and Maddie
Russell, this year looked set to be very exciting for science,
technology, engineering and maths.
One such venture was Borlase’s very own science fair. In
true American tradition, over 50 year 7s and 8s created
their own projects and then presented them in the hall
on 19
th
March. They spent weeks, moulding, researching,
writing and creating a whole range of different projects.
Some exciting topics included rainforest preservation (of
course complete with a to scale replica of the rainforest
and all its wildlife!), the future of fullerenes, popcorn, the
ocean and relative planetary gravity!
It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and the year 7s and
8s certainly knew their stuff! The scientific content of many
of the projects was GCSE level! The judging panel viewed
every table, heard from the students about their projects
and even witnessed some interactive demonstrations.
Then everyone made their way up to the theatre for some
exciting science demonstrations from Mr Lee himself.
These included flame colours, the ignition of ethanol and
hydrogen bottle rockets!
And then came the highlight of the evening; the
prestigious Melanie Windridge gave a fascinating talk all
about Physics. Overall the evening was a great success
and the top 4 prizes went to:
Thomas Lewthwaite-Page for non-newtonian fluids in
body armour
Jana Baguley for soap bubble wires
Georgia Keyworth and Megan Willis for saving chicks
Danielle Blount and Zara Harris for save the rainforest
A big well done to everyone who took part – I feel this may
be the start of a new Borlase tradition.
