sailing away
All my thoughts and words for you, all my romantic tales,
I once thought I was your anchor, not the wind that fills your sails;
I used to think I was for you, the smooth and calmest sea
But now it seems I am the tide, washing you away from me.
I thought I was your Captain, but it seems I am no more,
Instead I stand, white hankerchief’d, alone. And on the shore.
Harry Radcliffe Y12
Harry won the National Anthology Prize this
year for his poem ‘Smiles in your Eyes’, the
youngest poet ever to have won the award. He
is shown receiving his trophy and a cheque for
£1000 from Peter Quinn of United Press.
